InnoFabric RFC Series

The InnoFabric RFC Series is the working document series for open technical specifications, reference models, and related standards-track material developed through the InnoFabric initiative.

It provides a structured way to publish, discuss, and evolve foundational technical artefacts for Europe’s operational cloud fabric, including naming, control, interoperability, and related specification areas.

The RFC Series is intended to support open review, technical clarity, and long-term continuity across independently operated European cloud and infrastructure environments.

Current methodological area: XRN – eXtended Resource Naming

The first current methodological area in the InnoFabric RFC Series is XRN – eXtended Resource Naming.

XRN is an open standard for cloud and data-centre resource naming, maintained through the InnoFabric IWG and intended for general use across European cloud and infrastructure environments.

Its purpose is to provide a shared model for identifying and referencing infrastructure resources in a way that is structured, interoperable, and suitable for long-term use across providers, control domains, and operational contexts.

Current draft RFCs

The documents below are early draft versions published to outline direction and invite feedback.

  • RFC-0001 — XRN Specification (draft)
Introduces the initial model for structured resource identification and canonical representation.

  • RFC-0002 — XRN Usage by InnoFabric (draft)
Explores how XRNs are used within InnoFabric control and operational contexts.
